The Karakoram Highway, connecting Pakistan and China via a land route, remained operational during the harsh winter season owing to the relentless efforts of the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO).
Previously, the highway, renowned as one of the world's highest-altitude roads, used to close from December to March due to heavy snowfall. However, in 2022, the governments of Pakistan and China decided to keep it open year-round to promote tourism and trade between the two countries.
FWO teams undertook the responsibility of maintaining the highway's accessibility, even in extreme weather conditions. Through tireless work, they ensured the road stayed clear of snow, utilising advanced mechanical snow-clearing techniques.
In addition, FWO established medical centres and recovery points at various locations to facilitate travellers during the challenging winter journey.
This uninterrupted connectivity is expected to boost trade and tourism between Pakistan and China.
