Mewar University in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, has suspended 35 Kashmiri students following their three-day protest over unrecognized nursing degrees, according to Indian media reports.
The students were demonstrating against their degrees not being recognized by the Rajasthan and Indian Nursing Council, raising concerns about their academic future.
The Jammu and Kashmir Student Association has criticized the university's decision, stating that instead of addressing legitimate concerns about degree recognition, the institution opted for suspension.
According to media sources, the university administration has alleged misconduct by the students, a claim that the suspended students deny.
This incident follows several recent developments affecting Kashmiri students in Indian educational institutions. In 2022, the government implemented regulations preventing Kashmiri students from enrolling in Pakistani educational institutions, with previously obtained degrees from Pakistani institutions being declared invalid.
In a separate incident during the 2023 World Cup, seven Kashmiri students faced charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for celebrating India's defeat in the final match.
Recent reports have also emerged about Kashmiri students facing harassment in Indian universities, with some students claiming they were forced to leave their institutions due to intimidation.
The Jammu and Kashmir Student Association has called for immediate attention to these educational challenges and urged authorities to protect students' academic rights.
