Renowned economist Dr. Qaiser Bengali has tendered his resignation from three important government committees due to dissatisfaction over the government's handling of economic reforms.
Dr. Bengali, who was a member of the Austerity Committee, the Right Sizing Committee, and the Government Expenditure Reduction Committee, officially submitted his resignation to Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and the Cabinet Secretary.
In his letter addressed to Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and the Cabinet Secretary, he expressed dissatisfaction that the government was not serious about implementing the recommendations of those committees, source reported.
He said the committees suggested many ways and means to reduce government expenditure that also included the closure of 17 divisions and 50 government departments, but the government had done something quite contrary.
Dr Bengali opined that the government also made the wrong decision of sending off the junior employees instead of sending off the senior officers from grade 17 to 22, saying such steps would not help resolve the core issue of excessive government expenditure.
He, however, said that removing senior officers instead could save the government up to 30 billion rupees annually.
