On August 27, 2013, communal violence erupted in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India, resulting in hundreds of Muslim casualties. The riots, which began after a minor motorcycle accident took on religious overtones, continued for 20 days.
The violence led to hundreds of deaths and injuries among Muslims, with over 50,000 people displaced. India's Supreme Court held both central and state governments directly responsible for the riots.
The Justice Vishnu Sahay Commission attributed responsibility for the violence to the BJP and Samajwadi Party. BJP leader Sangeet Som was accused of inciting violence by sharing fake videos on social media, according to India Today.
In 2022, BJP leader Vikram Singh was sentenced to two years in prison for his role in the riots.
