As remote work becomes increasingly common, many professionals are seeking to explore the world while maintaining their careers.
The term "digital nomad" is now widely used to describe such individuals who work remotely while traveling.
In light of this trend, Global Citizen Solutions has released a list of the best countries for digital nomads, evaluating 65 countries based on factors like visa cost, benefits, quality of life, economy, and technology.
Spain tops the list as the best European country for digital nomads, having introduced its Digital Nomad Visa program in early 2023. To qualify for this visa, applicants must meet several criteria:
- Be a non-European citizen.
- Be a freelancer or work for a company based outside of Spain.
- Have no criminal record in Spain or any other country in the past five years.
- Have health insurance that covers Spain.
- Provide proof of qualifications, such as a university degree or relevant work experience.
- Demonstrate a professional relationship with a foreign company for at least three months (for freelancers).
- Show sufficient funds to support their stay, with a minimum monthly income of $2,750. If bringing family, the required income increases to $3,750 per month.
Following Spain, the Netherlands ranks second, with Norway, Estonia, and Romania completing the top five. Other notable countries in the top ten include Malta, Portugal, Canada, Hungary, and France. Taiwan and Malaysia are the only Asian countries in the top 15, ranking 12th and 15th, respectively.
The report highlights that digital nomad visa programs are particularly beneficial for citizens of countries with weaker passports, making it easier for them to obtain permanent residency elsewhere.
Global Citizen Solutions' list reflects the growing appeal of digital nomadism, offering valuable insights for freelancers and remote workers looking to combine work with travel.
