In a recent statement, former Indian cricket team batting coach Vikram Rathour has lauded Shubman Gill's potential following the young batter's appointment as vice-captain for India's white-ball formats.
Gill, who recently captained India to a 4-1 series victory against Zimbabwe in T20Is, has been named vice-captain for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, a move Rathour strongly supports.
Rathour, who served as India’s batting coach from 2019 to 2024, expressed confidence that Gill's new role will enhance his performance and leadership skills.
"From what I have observed, whether with the Gujarat Titans or during the Zimbabwe series, Gill has demonstrated commendable leadership and a positive demeanor. This vice-captaincy is a significant responsibility, and I believe it will bring out the best in him," Rathour stated.
Drawing parallels with previous Indian captains, Rathour suggested that Gill’s leadership could mirror the success seen with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
"Captaincy has historically propelled players like Kohli and Sharma to greater heights. Though Gill is not yet the captain, being part of the leadership group will undoubtedly enhance his abilities," Rathour added.
Having worked closely with Gill over the past five years, Rathour commended the 24-year-old’s game awareness and adaptability.
“When I first observed him, his talent was unmistakable. His understanding of the game, especially in varied situations, is remarkable for someone of his age. Gill has shown an impressive grasp of how to handle challenges and situations on the field,” Rathour concluded.
