Prominent leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have expressed their opposition to the federal government’s decision to ban the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Former Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani and senior PPP leader Khursheed Shah have voiced their concerns over the move, citing democratic principles and the need for political stability.
It is noteworthy that the federal government has decided to file a review appeal against the Supreme Court's decision on certain seats and ban PTI.
Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar confirmed that the government would take the matter to the Supreme Court.
Raza Rabbani’s stand
Mian Raza Rabbani, former Chairman of the Senate, strongly opposed the ban on PTI. He emphasized that banning a political party contradicts democratic values and warned that such actions could escalate political instability and harm the economy.
Rabbani suggested that if the government is dissatisfied with the Supreme Court's decision, it should pursue the constitutional route and apply for a review. He reminded that historically, attempts to ban political parties in Pakistan have always failed.
Furthermore, he urged the government to focus on curbing internal terrorism, highlighting that armed forces, security personnel, and civilians are increasingly being targeted.
Khurshid Shah’s reaction
Khursheed Shah, another senior PPP leader, criticized the government's decision and complained that the PPP was not consulted regarding the ban on PTI. Shah emphasized the importance of political dialogue and unity in addressing the country's current challenges.
He stated that he would adhere to the party's policy and could not express a personal opinion until the PPP's official stance is announced. Shah highlighted the constitutional violations committed by Arif Alvi, Qasim Suri, and the PTI founder, stressing that the courts should decide on these matters.
