Asma Jahangir Legal Aid Cell will host the 5th Asma Jahangir Conference from 27 to 28 April at Flaties Hotel, Lahore.
The Asma Jahangir Conference will continue for two days and is titled "People's Mandate, Protection of Civil Rights in South Asia" and will be organized in collaboration with the Supreme Court Bar Association and Pakistan Bar Council.
Federal Minister of Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar, judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts and ambassadors of Europe, Great Britain and Norway will participate in the opening ceremony.
Prominent politicians will also participate in the conference, including Chairman Senate Yousuf Raza Gilani, former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Abdul Malik Baloch, Akhtar Mengal, Barrister Syed Ali Zafar, Farooq Naik, Nafisa Shah, Shehla Raza, Khurram Dastgir, Baba Jan, Taj Haider, Farhatullah Babar, Dr Ayesha Ghos Pasha, Ayesha Siddiqa Raza Farooq, Raheela Durrani, Soraya Bibi and Samar Bilour are included while the participants will also address the event.
Besides, former judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, Justice Dadhanya, former judge of the Supreme Court of India, Justice Markande Katjo, former judge of the High Court of Denmark, Frederik Wage, former judge Attorney General Irfan Qadir, Justice (Retd.) Nasira Iqbal, former President of Sindh High Court Association Salahuddin Ahmed, and other participants will discuss legal issues across South Asia and the Middle East.
The conference will discuss the rights of women and transgender community as well as issues of provinces and climate change.
The Asma Jahangir Conference recognizes that South Asia, particularly Pakistan, is shaping its political and democratic future, and against this challenging backdrop, the Conference strives to move forward with the same courage and determination as the late Asma Jahangir, embodied throughout her professional career.
