Recent economic fluctuations, including the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and surging inflation rates affecting grocery costs, have prompted many individuals to explore more cost-effective meal options, with fast food often being a preferred choice.
McDonald's, established in 1955, has long been considered an affordable dining option for numerous Americans. When the iconic Big Mac made its debut at a single Pennsylvania franchise in 1967, it was priced at a mere 45 cents.
Today, the cost of a Big Mac has increased by more than tenfold, varying significantly across states. According to a real-time updated Pantry and Larder map, Oklahoma currently boasts the least expensive Big Macs, with one location offering the burger for $3.49.
Several other states in the Midwest, including Missouri, Alabama, Texas, Florida, Kentucky, and Ohio, also offer the iconic burger at lower prices.
However, the price of Big Macs is at its highest in states such as New York, Hawaii, and Massachusetts, where they range from $4.99 to $5.23.
Although prices may fluctuate based on whether customers order the burger at the restaurant, via the McDonald's app, or through food delivery service apps, the most cost-effective options are generally found in middle America.
The Economist introduced the Big Mac Index in 1986 as a playful indicator of whether currencies are appropriately valued, addressing the notion that average burger prices should be lower in less affluent countries due to reduced labour costs.
Beyond the Big Mac, McDonald's Happy Meal, which includes a hamburger or Chicken McNuggets, along with fries, apple slices, a beverage, and a toy, also varies in price. Data from CashNetUSA in March 2023 revealed that the most affordable Happy Meals could be found in central states such as Arkansas at $2.76 and Missouri at $2.79.
Despite price increases in some menu items, McDonald's has consistently attracted customers and maintained strong financial performance, with U.S. same-store sales indicating robust growth in recent periods.
Financial analyst Mark Kalinowski noted that McDonald's reported very strong same-store sales growth in January, likely exceeding low double digits, illustrating the company's continued success despite evolving price structures.
