The Henley Passport Index for 2024 has unveiled its latest rankings, with France clinching the coveted top spot as the world's most powerful passport. Meanwhile, India's passport ranking has experienced a slight decline, slipping from 84th to 85th position compared to the previous year.
Despite the drop in ranking, Indian passport holders now enjoy visa-free access to 62 countries, up from 60 countries last year. This increase in visa-free destinations contrasts with India's dip in the overall rankings.
France's dominance in the index is evident, with its passport granting visa-free entry to an impressive 194 countries. Joining France at the top are Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain, all boasting strong passport rankings.
In contrast, Pakistan maintains its position at 106th place, while Bangladesh has slipped to the 102nd position.
Neighbouring Maldives retains its robust passport strength, securing the 58th position, allowing Maldivian passport holders visa-free travel to 96 countries.
Despite recent announcements from Iran, Malaysia, and Thailand offering visa-free entry for Indian tourists, India's ranking experienced a downturn in the Henley Passport Index.
The Henley Passport Index relies on data spanning nearly two decades, drawing from the International Air Transport Association's specialized data covering 199 passports and 227 travel destinations worldwide. Updated monthly, the index serves as a benchmark for global mobility and travel freedom.
Over the past 19 years, global mobility has witnessed significant changes, with the number of visa-free travel destinations nearly doubling from 58 countries in 2006 to 111 countries in 2024.
In the dynamic landscape of international travel, passport strength remains a key factor influencing global mobility and travel opportunities for citizens worldwide.
