THAAP arranged an enlightening talk on globally acclaimed mural painter and calligrapher Syed Sadequain Ahmad Naqvi popularly known as Sadequain, in which leading architect, academician and consultant Khawar Hassan shared untold anecdotes of his association with the master artist.
Khawar Hassan shared profound memories of his first encounter with great artist Sadequain in Mangla in 1967 and then meeting him in person, while he was in Lahore Museum in 1971-72 for painting a very large ceiling mural for its lobby/gallery and calligraphic work in for its Islamic gallery.
The talk enlightened the attendants with personality traits of Sadequain, his artistic intellect, innovative approach in traditional Islamic calligraphy, philosophical aspects of his great work, and lasting legacy he left for future generations. Khawar Hassan shed light on Sadequain’s ability to transcend artistic boundaries and convey profound messages through his work ensure that he remains a revered figure in the world of art and calligraphy that continues to inspire and captivate art enthusiasts around the world.
The talk consisted of slide presentation with historical pictures, Khawar Hassan revealed personal memories of time which he spent with Sadequain after graduation from UET. He said that like all the youngsters, I got massively inspired by his talents, i.e., painting, calligraphy, and poetry. The massive size of his murals and his capacity to work were incredible.
Khawar Hassan recounted that he also privilege to work with Sadequain on a 400’ running band of Surat Yasin, that he did for the Islamic Gallery of the Lahore Museum and gradually became one of Sadequain very close and frank friend. He had lots of dialogues, discussions with him regarding his painting and calligraphy in particular and his life struggle in particular and many other issues in general, Sadequain shared stories from his stay and work in different countries. Khawar Hassan shared that he tried to convince the master painter that, he should teach his skills to younger painters and calligraphers.
During the talk Khawar Hassan also presented the drawings and sketches that Sadequain gave to him, that also included a special painting that Sadequain exclusively painted for him. The talk was attended by a large appreciative audience who also asked question about the legend painter and his cherishing legacy. Prof. Pervaiz Vandal thanked the speaker Khawar Hassan for well informative talk. While presenting his tribute to Sadequain, Prof. Vandal said that Sadequain the master calligrapher have left on indelible mark on the world of calligraphy and visual arts and is a great source of inspiration for all of us and upcoming generation.
