The Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected on Wednesday Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elah petition seeking the 'Peacock' as his election symbol for the upcoming February 8 elections.
The high court upheld the Election Commission's decision that had previously allotted the symbol of a 'donkey cart' to Pervaiz Elahi.
Former Chief Minister of Punjab and PTI leader, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, had approached the Lahore High Court, challenging the election symbol assigned to him and requesting a review. He pleaded for the symbol of a 'peacock' to be granted instead.
Despite the Supreme Court of Pakistan granting permission last Friday for Pervaiz Elahi to contest the elections, the Lahore High Court bench, headed by Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan, ruled against his plea for a symbol change.
The court maintained that the Election Commission's decision to assign the 'donkey cart' symbol to Pervaiz Elahi would stand.
Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, a key PTI leader, had faced rejection of his nomination papers by the returning officer, a decision which was later dismissed by the high court and the election appellate tribunal.
Elahi's lawyer argued in the Lahore High Court that the decision to allot the 'donkey cart' symbol was based on malice, claiming that the returning officer had refused to accept the application for the 'peacock' symbol. Despite these assertions, the court upheld the Election Commission's decision.
