Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Asif Kirmani, highlighted a shift in the party's narrative and revealed that the PML-N would not adopt an anti-establishment stance in the upcoming elections.
He acknowledged ‘vote ko izzat do’ narrative has slipped away from PMLN, and emphasized there was a need for a new narrative.
PML-N senior leader gave an interview to the Voice of America.
Gen Bajwa's extension reshapes PMLN narrative
The extension of general Bajwa's term played a pivotal role in reshaping the party's stance, ending the previous narrative of vote ko izzat do.
Kirmani suggested that Nawaz Sharif has become more expedient and less compromising, attributing this change to influential elements within the party.
According to Kirmani, Nawaz Sharif aimed for a systemic change in the country, but some elements prevented him from fully pursuing his goals. The senior leader expressed Nawaz Sharif's desire for immediate elections after the no-confidence motion, alleging interference from certain elements within the party that altered the decision.
Kirmani also shed light on a ‘new edition’ within the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) suggesting that decisions are now being taken from Nawaz Sharif by this emerging faction.
“This shift in decision-making has led to concerns among old party leaders, who feel that the party is losing its traditional identity,”
The interview revealed dissent within the party, with senior leaders expressing reservations about certain decisions.
“Shahid Khaqan Abbasi reportedly conveyed to Nawaz Sharif that Maryam Nawaz's leadership is not accepted,” he said.
Kirmani clarified that accountability does not necessarily mean punishing judges and generals. He emphasized Nawaz Sharif's desire for people to acknowledge their mistakes.
Regarding the upcoming elections, PML-N is pushing for polls on February 8, expressing eagerness to kickstart the election campaign.
