The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) thwarted a plot to disrupt the February 8 elections by successfully apprehending two potential suicide bombers.
The arrested individuals, affiliated with Daesh Khorasan, were planning attacks on key political figures, specifically targeting Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Awami National Party’s (ANP) leader Aimal Wali Khan.
The suspects, who had undergone training in the Paktia region of Afghanistan, were found in possession of suicide jackets, hand grenades, and Daesh-related propaganda material.
The bomb disposal unit (BDS) neutralized the weapons. The outlawed organization was previously linked to targeted killings in the region.
Additionally, progress has been made in identifying the person responsible for a bomb planted on Warsak Road.
This comes after an attack on Maulana Fazlur Rehman's convoy in Dera Ismail Khan last month, where he fortunately escaped unharmed.
