Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, once hailed as global icons, are now facing a decline in public favor after becoming the target of comedic jabs at the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards.
The couple, currently residing in the United States, did not attend the ceremony, but comedian Jo Koy didn't miss the opportunity to take a swipe at them, leading to a notable backlash.
During his hosting duties at the prestigious awards ceremony, Koy poked fun at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, singling out their lucrative Netflix deal. He quipped, "Harry and Meghan Markle got paid millions for doing absolutely nothing. And that's just by Netflix."
The comedian didn't stop there, playfully referencing the acclaimed series "Succession" and drawing parallels with "The Crown," teasing, "Just a great series about a rich, white, dysfunctional family, all scheming -- oh, wait, that's The Crown. I'm sorry."
Royal commentator Phil Dampier, speaking on the matter, expressed concern over the couple's evolving public image. Dampier told GB News, "The Sussexes have become figures of ridicule. When you start to become figures of ridicule, you are in trouble. When they first went out there, they were popular."
He emphasised the significance of losing favor even among those who initially supported them, stating, "When you've fallen out with the woke luvvies and they're starting to take the mickey out of you, you know that your star has fallen."
The Golden Globe jibe marks a shift in the perception of Meghan and Harry, who, since stepping back from their roles as senior members of the royal family, have embarked on various ventures, including a multimillion-dollar deal with streaming giant Netflix.
