EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell emphasized on Wednesday that the international community must play a proactive role in resolving the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
Speaking to diplomats in Portugal, Borrell stressed the need for external imposition of a solution, involving intense engagement from the United States, Europe, and Arab countries. He expressed concern over the recent strike in Beirut, cautioning that it could escalate the conflict.
He had planned to visit Lebanon on Thursday, but the trip might be canceled due to security concerns. The killing of Saleh al-Aruri, a senior Hamas leader, in the Beirut strike is widely attributed to Israel, which has pledged to destroy Hamas and conducted a sustained military campaign in Gaza, resulting in numerous casualties.
The Gaza war was triggered by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, causing a significant loss of life and leading to the ongoing conflict.
