As inflationary pressures continue to impact global economies, people's purchasing power is declining, prompting changes in lifestyle. Nevertheless, for those planning annual vacations, there are still opportunities to explore some of the world's top cities on a tight budget.
In the 2023 'Living Costs' report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), average prices for non-consumer goods and services increased by a significant 7.4% over the past year, surpassing the 2.9% rise observed over the previous five years.
However, the impact of rising prices varies across regions. The report thoroughly analyzes the costs of over 200 goods and services, encompassing food items, clothing, rents, and travel expenses, across 173 countries.
Certain cities have managed to remain relatively affordable, offering luxurious amenities at low costs compared to the Global Index outlined in the EIU report.
1. Lisbon, Portugal: Lisbon, Western Europe's least expensive city, has become a favorite for digital nomads, offering affordable living costs. The city introduced policies, issuing one- to two-year visas for digital nomads, making it 56% cheaper than other cities, according to 'Expectistan.'
2. Buenos Aires, Argentina: Despite economic challenges, Buenos Aires ranks 163 out of 173 cities, benefitting from the depreciation of the currency. The city attracts travelers with its favorable Blue Dollar rate and affordable living expenses, including cheap rent and food.
3. Toronto, Canada: While major American cities are among the most expensive, Toronto ranks 27th among the cheapest cities. Known for safety and family-friendly attractions, the city offers budget-friendly experiences, such as boat trips on Lake Ontario and visits to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
4. Tokyo, Japan: Despite being considered expensive, Tokyo remains affordable compared to other Asian cities like Singapore and Hong Kong. Japan values tourism to boost its currency, making Tokyo a budget-friendly destination, especially after changes in policies due to the global pandemic.
5. Perth, Australia: Compared to Sydney and Melbourne, Perth is described as cheaper, offering a mild climate, beautiful beaches, and scenic landscapes. The city's high salaries contribute to the locals' high purchasing power, and accommodation is relatively more affordable.
These cities provide opportunities for budget-conscious travelers to explore diverse cultures and attractions without compromising on experiences.
