On December 24, 2018, an Islamabad accountability court announced that ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif had seven years in jail in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference.
The court also fined Nawaz Rs1.5 billion and US $25 million in the Al-Azizia reference.
A disqualification of 10 years from holding any public office was part of the sentences awarded to the former premier.
It is pertinent to note that disqualification was supposed to come into effect following his release from jail after serving the seven-year sentence.
Nawaz Sharif was then transported to Adiala jail as he was taken into custody from the courtroom, but later he was shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore.
At that time, the accountability court acquitted Nawaz Sharif in the Flagship reference.
