Julio Cesar Bermejo, a 26-year-old man was arrested after being discovered carrying an 800-year-old mummified corpse inside a food delivery bag in Peru.
Julio referred to the mummy as "Juanita", his alleged girlfriend, and told the authorities that it sleeps in his bedroom and he takes care of it.
After the mummified corpse was inspected, scans later revealed that the remains actually belonged to a male.
"I take care of it. It's like if you'll pardon the expression, as if it were my spiritual girlfriend," Bermejo explained in an interview with local news outlet.
He further revealed that the mummy had been in his family for the past 30 years but did not disclose where or how his father had acquired the artifact.
The incident came to light when police discovered Bermejo carrying the mummy in a delivery bag labeled 'Pedidos Ya,' a well-known Latin American food delivery app.
Photos released by The Ministry of Culture of Peru showcased the pre-Hispanic mummy, estimated to be between 600 to 800 years old.
Contrary to Bermejo's initial belief, specialists from the ministry emphasized, "It's not a Juanita; it's a Juan." The mummy was identified as that of a man who had lived at least 45 years and was found wrapped in bandages in a fetal position.
Bermejo vehemently denied any intention of selling the mummy, asserting that he was merely fulfilling the curiosity of his friends who wanted to see the ancient artifact.
Peru, known for its rich archaeological sites and historical artifacts, is most famously associated with the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, a 15th-century marvel located near Cusco.
