Israel’s war against Hamas has entered its 40th day — five weeks after Hamas killed at least 1,400 Israelis and wounded more than 3,300 in a surprise attack.
Al Jazeera reported Dr Munir al-Bursh, the general director of hospitals in the Gaza Strip, as saying that Israeli forces searched the basement of Al-Shifa Hospital early on Wednesday.
He said that Israeli forces also entered the surgical and emergency buildings located within the hospital complex. He also said that some people staying at the hospital were fired upon while trying to leave the hospital corridor, which was earlier declared as safe to exit.
“Not a single bullet was fired from inside the hospital during the occupation forces’ storming of the complex,” al-Bursh told Al Jazeera.
Gaza health ministry said over 11,240 Palestinians have been killed. Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad hold hostage more than 239 soldiers and civilians, including foreign nationals.
The IDF alleged operational control of the al-Shati refugee camp in Gaza City—alleging one of Hamas’ main infrastructure centers.
As international calls for a ceasefire mount, U.S. President Joe Biden said he believes the release of hostages held by Hamas is "going to happen, but I don't want to get into any details."

The IDF said that it has taken over Hamas government institutions used for military purposes in the civilian neighbourhoods of Gaza City, as well as assumed operational control of the al-Shati refugee camp.
The IDF assessed that Hamas held Israeli hostages beneath Al-Shifa Hospital.
The IDF spokesperson said the army has offered to move incubators from Israel to Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City ‘when the situation on the ground allows it.’
UNRWA said that its fuel reserves in the Gaza Strip – used for the desalination plant, wastewater treatment plants, and hospital in the southern Gaza Strip – will run out in 48 hours.
The health ministry said it can no longer publish current data on the death toll in the Strip due to the lack of internet connection, and that it has lost contact with the hospitals.
In the north, the IDF said it struck Hezbollah targets after anti-tank missiles and mortar shells were fired on Israeli army posts from Lebanon. A senior Hamas Lebanon member said it intends to continue attacking Israel: "The battle is still at the beginning."
The IDF announced that Israeli soldier Noa Marciano had been killed in Hamas captivity, several hours after Hamas published a video of her.
Vivian Silver, the veteran peace activist believed to be kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, is now confirmed to have been killed in her home, which was set on fire by Hamas, on Kibbutz Be’eri.
Palestinian Islamic Jihad said it may wait for better conditions to release the 34 hostages it kidnapped from Israel, and may opt out of any deal between Israel and Hamas due to how negotiations are being conducted.
