The United States has reiterated its stance of neutrality on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, stating that it is not taking any position amid the recent uptick in tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly attack in the Pahalgam area of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
During a press briefing, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Washington was closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in the region. “We are not taking any immediate position on the Jammu and Kashmir issue. The situation between the two countries is dynamic, and we are following developments closely,” she said.
Commenting on the attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of over two dozen tourists, Bruce condemned the incident and stressed that “those responsible must be brought to justice.” She added, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this tragic attack and wish a swift recovery to the injured.”
When asked whether former President Donald Trump’s earlier offer to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir was still on the table, the spokesperson declined to comment. “President Trump and the Secretary of State have already stated their position on this matter, and I have nothing to add at this time,” she said.
In a separate comment on Middle East policy, Bruce reaffirmed that the US supports the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, provided it does not fall into the hands of terrorist entities. She also confirmed that the next round of nuclear talks with Iran is expected to take place in Oman and described the previous rounds as “positive and productive.”
