The tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, IIOJK, that claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists has left the entire region mourning.
As emotions continue to run high, the upcoming cross-border film Abir Gulaal, starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Indian actress Vaani Kapoor, is now facing major backlash in India.
Abir Gulaal, directed by Aarti S. Bagdi, is a romantic drama slated for release on May 9, 2025. The film, which showcases a love story across borders, has become controversial simply due to Fawad Khan’s Pakistani nationality. In light of the recent attack in IIOJK, Indians find it inappropriate to promote or release a film involving a Pakistani actor.
Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram have seen a surge in calls to boycott the film. Hashtags like #BoycottAbirGulaal are trending, as users urge others to avoid the film and protest its release.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), an Indian Political party, has also taken a strong stand. Known for its firm opposition to Pakistani artists working in India, the party has warned cinema owners not to screen Abir Gulaal in Maharashtra.
While Vaani Kapoor is busy promoting the film internationally, her silence on the Pahalgam tragedy hasn’t gone unnoticed. Many netizens have called her out for not addressing the attack and for collaborating with a Pakistani co-star amid growing tensions.
Given the troubled climate and political pushback, the fate of Abir Gulaal hangs in the balance. There’s no official statement from the producers or the Indian censor board yet, but cinema chains may rethink screening the film in certain regions to avoid protests.
