In a bid to tackle the persistent traffic congestion woes in Karachi, the city is all set to embrace a tech-savvy solution that aims to keep the citizens well-informed about the ever-evolving traffic conditions.
The move, spearheaded by the DIG Traffic and Sindh Police Chief, Riffat Mukhtar Raja, has garnered significant attention, as it involves the deployment of large Surface-Mounted Device (SMD) screens at key locations across the sprawling metropolis.
Eyes on the road
Karachi's bustling streets have long been synonymous with traffic gridlocks, and motorists grappling with daily commutes have yearned for a solution to streamline the flow of vehicles.
The forthcoming installation of 10 strategically positioned SMD screens on major roadways promises to alleviate this enduring problem.
These dynamic screens will not only display real-time traffic updates but also provide alternative routes, offering a glimmer of hope for those seeking respite from the city's perpetual congestion.
Moreover, they will relay crucial information about traffic disruptions stemming from ongoing construction activities, aiding commuters in making informed decisions on the road.
Raising traffic awareness
During his recent visit to the DIG Traffic's office, Riffat Mukhtar Raja highlighted the importance of instilling traffic discipline and awareness among the city's younger generation.
He stressed the need to educate youngsters on traffic laws, potentially mitigating the reckless driving habits that contribute to Karachi's traffic woes. Raja's vision encompasses introducing educational programs on traffic regulations in educational institutions, laying the groundwork for a safer and more organized road network.
Embracing technology
In addition to the SMD screens, the Sindh Police Chief was briefed on various technological advancements introduced by the traffic police.
Notably, the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at strategic locations throughout the city, with 26 such cameras to be stationed along the arterial Shahrah-e-Faisal, aims to enhance the enforcement of traffic rules.
Addressing the manpower issue that often plagues traffic management, Riffat Mukhtar Raja emphasized the necessity of bolstering the traffic police force to better address the city's traffic-related challenges. The impending introduction of SMD screens is poised to augment traffic flow management on Karachi's busiest roadways, paving the way for a smoother and more efficient transportation experience for its residents.
