Google has expanded the capabilities of its AI-powered chatbot, Gemini, with the introduction of two new features – 'Canvas' and 'Audio Overview' – aimed at enhancing user experience in coding and content consumption.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, follows OpenAI’s launch of its 'Canvas' tool for ChatGPT in October, marking yet another instance of growing competition between AI giants.
Canvas: New interactive coding and writing tool
Canvas, which is now available for Gemini and Gemini Advanced subscribers, offers an interactive workspace for coding and writing projects.
The feature allows users to generate, refine, and share content seamlessly within the Gemini app, accessible on both web and mobile platforms.
According to Google, the tool enables users to fine-tune text by adjusting tone, length, and formatting with simple prompts. Additionally, it supports real-time collaboration by allowing content to be exported directly to Google Docs.
“Within Canvas, you can generate and preview HTML/React code and web app prototypes, visualizing your design instantly,” Google stated in a blog post.
The tool also enables developers to modify and preview elements such as input fields and call-to-action buttons before sharing their work.
Google claims that Canvas simplifies the coding process by reducing the need to switch between multiple applications, offering a streamlined experience for both beginner and experienced developers.
AI-powered summarisation
The second feature, Audio Overview, builds upon Google’s NotebookLM’s capabilities by converting written materials into AI-generated podcast-style discussions. Users can upload documents through the Gemini prompt bar, generating audio summaries that can be downloaded or shared.
Currently, the feature supports various file formats but is limited to English. Google has announced plans to expand language support soon.
“Audio Overview enhances learning in a fun and productive way,” the company said, adding that it could help users process class notes, research papers, lengthy email threads, or reports more efficiently.
With AI competition intensifying, Google’s latest updates reflect a broader trend of rapid innovation and feature expansion in the artificial intelligence sector.
