On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, celebrated annually on October 17th, the world unites to raise awareness about the scourge of poverty and to promote dialogue between those living in poverty and society at large.
This year's theme, "Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting dignity in practice for all," underscores the urgent need to address the challenges faced by those trapped in extreme poverty, where individuals often toil in perilous conditions, labor long hours, and still cannot earn enough income to adequately support themselves and their families.
The theme also serves as a clarion call to political leaders and policymakers, urging them to prioritize human dignity as the guiding principle in all decision-making processes.
The ultimate objective of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is to eliminate poverty entirely.
History
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed annually on October 17th, has a history deeply rooted in the global struggle to eliminate poverty and promote social justice. Its origins can be traced back to the efforts of a visionary leader and a grassroots movement.
The journey of this day began in 1987 when Joseph Wresinski, a French Catholic priest and human rights advocate, founded the International Movement ATD Fourth World. Father Wresinski had firsthand experience with extreme poverty and understood the pressing need to address this issue on a global scale. He recognized that poverty wasn't just a matter of economic deprivation but also a violation of human rights and dignity.
In 1987, Wresinski gathered a hundred thousand people from all backgrounds and walks of life at the Trocadéro Human Rights Plaza in Paris to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Call to Action he had made to the world.
During this event, he unveiled a commemorative stone that bore the inscription "Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty."
This event marked the birth of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
It was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1992, following a call to action from the International Movement ATD Fourth World and a subsequent resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly.
The date, October 17th, was chosen as a symbolic reminder of Wresinski's commitment to the cause, as it coincides with the anniversary of his commemorative stone's unveiling.
