Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government and the media have a relationship of mutual trust, adding that the media’s constructive criticism of government policies is very important for improving governance.
The PM said this in a meeting with a delegation of Pakistan Broadcasters Association. He claimed that the government welcomed constructive criticism from the media and believed it to be the fourth pillar of the state, stressing that there was complete freedom of expression in Pakistan.
He further talked about the ‘Uran Pakistan’ project, calling it a locally developed national development programme, and asserted that the government will make the project successful with the cooperation of the media and all stakeholders.
Discussing the nation’s economic recovery, the PM credited the current economic team for significant achievements, including a reduction in inflation and interest rates, increased exports, and progress in industrial and agricultural development.
“Pakistan’s growth momentum has resumed from where it was halted in 2018,” he remarked, attributing the resurgence to business-friendly policies and reforms. "Even today, after economic stability under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif, the journey of development continues with vigour."
Shehbaz expressed gratitude to friendly nations for their support, which he said helped Pakistan avoid default and return to the path of economic growth. He acknowledged the increase in remittances as a sign of overseas Pakistanis’ trust in government policies.
Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted the ongoing reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), including its rapid digitalisation and the introduction of a faceless assessment system aimed at improving the customs system, increasing revenues, and eliminating corruption. He noted that measures to curb the smuggling of key commodities like petroleum products, sugar, and fertiliser have significantly benefited the national exchequer.
On the diplomatic front, the PM emphasized the strengthening of Pakistan’s ties with friendly countries and the restoration of its global image. “By the grace of Allah, Pakistan has regained its standing on the international stage,” he said.
He also touched upon the progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), calling it a cornerstone for regional development. “The fruits of CPEC are becoming visible, and the dream of development envisioned by Nawaz Sharif and the Chinese president is close to realization,” he noted. He added that the government was working day and night for the early completion of CPEC projects.
The PM reiterated the nation’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, paying tribute to the sacrifices made by the armed forces and citizens. “We will continue to fight this scourge until it is completely eliminated from the country,” he vowed.
The premier noted that a special group of anti-nationals that is bent on making Pakistan default economically repeatedly attacked Islamabad. He added that such elements found it hard to digest the country's economic stability and development.
Shehbaz also lauded Pakistan’s youth as the nation’s greatest asset and stressed the importance of providing them with international-standard education, training facilities, and equal opportunities. He expressed hope that the media would continue to play a positive role in Pakistan’s governance and development.
The PBA delegation assured the prime minister of their continued cooperation in promoting the country’s progress and prosperity.
