Universal Pictures has officially delayed the release of Shrek 5, shifting the much-anticipated sequel’s premiere to December 23, 2026.
The animated blockbuster was initially slated for a July 1, 2026 release but has been rescheduled to accommodate Illumination Entertainment’s Minions 3, which will now hit theatres in July 2026 instead of June 30, 2027.
New release window and competition
While Shrek 5 now avoids direct competition in its December slot, it will face a crowded holiday season with Ice Age 6 (20th Century Studios) and Dune: Messiah (Warner Bros.) also arriving the same month.
Returning cast and crew
Directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, with a screenplay by Michael McCullers, Shrek 5 marks the franchise’s return over a decade after Shrek Forever After (2010). Fan-favourite voice actors Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) will reprise their roles. Further plot details remain under wraps.
What’s next for the Shrek universe?
Following the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, DreamWorks is also developing a Donkey spin-off starring Eddie Murphy, set to release after Shrek 5. Since its 2001 debut, the Shrek franchise has grossed over $4 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful animated series of all time.
Fans eager for Shrek’s return will have to wait a little longer, but with Minions 3 arriving earlier, 2026 is shaping up to be a big year for animated films.
