A 32-year-old man from Gujarat resorted to extreme measures to avoid continuing his job as a computer operator at his relative's diamond company.
Mayur Tarapara, a resident of Surat, admitted to severing four fingers from his left hand after concocting a false story of an accident.
On January 8, Mayur approached the police, claiming that he had passed out while riding his motorcycle to a friend's house. Upon regaining consciousness, he found his left hand severely injured, with four fingers missing.
He reported the incident to authorities, who initially speculated that his fingers might have been removed for black magic purposes, a theory later disproven through investigation.
The case was registered at the Amroli police station in Surat before being transferred to the city's Crime Branch. Police investigators meticulously examined CCTV footage and spoke to witnesses in the area where Mayur allegedly collapsed, but found no evidence to support his account.
In fact, footage showed Mayur parking his motorcycle near a ring road before casually walking away, only to return with his left hand injured.
Under pressure from investigators, Mayur confessed to the gruesome act, revealing that he had intentionally cut off his fingers to make himself unfit for the job at his relative’s factory.
He admitted to purchasing a sharp knife and carrying out the self-mutilation near the Amroli Ring Road on the night of January 4. Mayur used a rope to stanch the bleeding and discarded both the severed fingers and the knife.
“I didn’t want to continue working at the diamond factory, but I couldn’t tell my relatives that I wanted to quit,” he told police. “So I decided to cut off my fingers to make myself unfit for work.”
Authorities recovered three of the severed fingers from a bag near the site, but are still investigating the details of the bizarre incident. A crime inspector working on the case revealed that Mayur’s decision was driven by his desire to avoid the pressure of continuing his employment. “We are still trying to gather more information from him,” the inspector stated.
