During a recent interview on BBC Radio 4 Today, he discussed his upcoming film, "The Great Escaper," and revealed that it will mark his farewell to the big screen.
Caine explained that he had already considered himself retired when he was initially offered the script for the film, and he turned it down three times.
However, after finally giving the script a read, he was captivated by its story, which is based on a true event from 2014, where a World War 2 veteran escaped his retirement home to attend a D-Day 70th-anniversary celebration.
The script had such a profound impact on Caine that he decided it would be a fitting and positive note on which to conclude his illustrious 70+ year career in acting.
Caine's previous hints at retirement often hinged on the idea that he would step away when the roles and offers stopped coming his way.
In his words from 2021, "There's not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man who's 88." Since "The Great Escaper" represents that exceptional script, and the opportunity might not come again, he feels content concluding his career with this project.
