Every year during the rainy season, a stunning stretch of road winding through Poyang Lake, China’s largest freshwater lake, transforms into a mesmerizing sight.
Known as Yongwu Road, this 5.05 km-long road appears to float on water, creating a one-of-a-kind driving experience that attracts thousands of tourists.
Located in Jiangxi Province, Yongwu Road is part of the X219 county road and serves as the only connection between Wucheng, one of China’s oldest townships, and neighbouring areas. However, its true magic unfolds in spring, when rising water levels partially submerge the road, making it appear as if vehicles are driving on water.
Once the water reaches 18.6 meters, sections of the road disappear beneath the lake’s surface, earning it the title of “China’s most beautiful road under the water.” However, this breathtaking phenomenon is short-lived, as authorities close the road at 19 meters for safety. The road remains inaccessible until late summer, when the water recedes to normal levels.
First opened to traffic in 2013, Yongwu Road has gained international recognition for its surreal beauty. Despite concerns over wet road conditions, there have been no major accidents reported, thanks to safety railings and controlled traffic regulations.
Last year, when the road reopened on August 8, more than 8,000 vehicles lined up to experience the rare spectacle, causing heavy congestion. Whether driving or simply admiring from a distance, Yongwu Road remains one of China’s most enchanting seasonal wonders.
