Two more countries have joined the European Union's Schengen visa zone, with travel to Romania and Bulgaria now possible on a Schengen visa.
Romania and Bulgaria have officially become part of the European Union's Schengen visa zone, marking a significant milestone in their integration into the bloc. This decision comes after around 13 years of negotiations that began in 2011.
As members of the Schengen zone, travellers with a Schengen visa can now visit Romania and Bulgaria without additional visa requirements. Both countries have removed their border checkpoints, allowing for seamless travel across their borders with other Schengen countries.
Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2008, but their inclusion in the Schengen zone faced prolonged discussions. The Schengen zone itself was established in 1985 and now comprises 29 member countries, promoting free movement and strengthening economic and social ties within Europe.
