The much-anticipated Netflix series Building The Band, which was set to feature former One Direction star Liam Payne as a mentor, is now facing significant uncertainty following the tragic death of the 31-year-old singer.
Payne passed away on October 16, 2024, after a fatal fall from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Argentina, leaving fans and the entertainment world in shock.
As reported by The Sun, the production company behind the series is preparing to meet with Payne's family to discuss the future of the show, which was filmed before his untimely death.
Sources have confirmed that the family will be consulted before any decision is made regarding the airing of Building The Band, which is scheduled for release in 2025.
A source close to the family revealed, “Netflix and the production company will meet with Liam’s family to ensure they are comfortable with the show being aired. Nothing will be finalized until they have given their blessing.”
The insider further added, “This was the last project he worked on, and he comes across very well in the series.”
Filming for Building The Band wrapped up in August 2024 at Manchester's Aviva Studios, just two months before Payne's death. The series features Payne alongside renowned stars Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls and Kelly Rowland, formerly of Destiny’s Child. The trio served as mentors to a group of 50 aspiring singers who were brought together to form a band, all while remaining unseen by each other.
Netflix has described the show as an unscripted series, where participants attempt to create a band through challenges and collaboration, despite never meeting face-to-face.
While the show’s premise has garnered significant attention, the production now faces the sensitive task of determining how to proceed following Payne's death.
The airing of Building The Band hinges on the approval of Payne’s family, who are set to meet with Netflix executives in the coming weeks. Fans and industry insiders are closely watching as the family prepares to make a decision that could honor Liam Payne’s legacy and the final project he worked on
