New Zealand bowlers had started off the proceedings with great brilliance by mounting pressure on Bangladesh straightaway in the 11th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.
WIith the exception of Mehidy Hasan Miraz (30), none of the batters from the top-order showed significant resistance with the bat. Litton Das, who generally has so much to show with the bat, out for the first-ball duck. Najmul Hossain Shanto (7) and Tanzid Hasan (16) failed to prove to be threatening for the Kiwis' bowlers.
The senior players, skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim were on the wicket to steer their team out of the trouble against the Kane Williamson-inspired New Zealand. However, after showing some resistance with the bat, Shakib departed on 40. But Mushfiqur Rahim managed to score a crucial half-century for his side before he was cleaned up by Henry on 66.
But, Mahmudullah, in the death overs played a responsible hand by scoring unbeaten 41 to power his team to the fighting total against New Zealand.
Lockie Ferguson (3-49) bagged three wickets.
Trent Boult (2-45) and Matt Henry (2-58) picked up two wickets apiece.
Mitchell Santner (1-31) and Glenn Phillips (1-13) took a scalp each.
Start to the match, Trent Boult displayed his skill once again by claiming a wicket in his very first over.
Litton Das, eager to take on the challenge, charged down the wicket on the very first ball, attempting a flick off Boult.
However, it was fielding by Matt Henry stationed at fine-leg that made all the difference. He caught, resulting in Litton Das' departure.
This early breakthrough has set the tone for New Zealand, who are off to an excellent start in the match.
