WhatsApp has announced new features to enhance its group video calling experience, making the platform more competitive with services like Google Meet and Zoom.
The updates include the ability to select specific participants for a group call, improved video resolution, and a redesigned call tab for desktop users.
Previously, WhatsApp allowed users to call an entire group at once. Now, users can choose specific members from a group chat to join a call, avoiding unnecessary disturbances for others.
This feature is handy for reaching only available participants or organizing surprises within a group.
Adding to the fun, WhatsApp is introducing playful video call effects, such as puppy ears, underwater filters, and karaoke-inspired microphone animations, to make conversations more engaging.
On the desktop, the app's revamped call tab now prominently features options to start a call, create a call link, or dial a number directly.
The company is also rolling out improved resolution for both individual and group calls across mobile and desktop platforms.
Over the past year, WhatsApp has significantly enhanced its video call capabilities by supporting up to 32 participants, introducing a speaker spotlight for better engagement during group calls, and enabling screen sharing with audio. These updates aim to solidify WhatsApp as a versatile tool for both personal and professional communication.
