The cold weather and frost have hit the mango orchards in Multan, causing significant damage to the fruit.
According to details, as temperatures dropped to six degrees Celsius, mango leaves began to rot due to the chill. This drastic change has left local gardeners worried about their year-long efforts.
Mango gardens spread over 80,000 acres in Multan were significantly affected by the cold. In response, gardeners started covering their plants with polyethylene bags to protect them from the frost. Horticulturists have advised further measures to safeguard the crops.
According to Muhammad Atif, a scientific officer at the Mango Research Institute, using plastic sheets to cover the plants is an effective and reliable method.
He also suggested using Sheesam tree branches or spraying water on the plants during expected frost nights to prevent damage.
Agricultural experts have recommended spraying blue sulphur and lime as additional measures to protect the plants from frost.
They emphasised that timely protective actions are the key to preventing further losses in the orchards.
