Parliamentary secretary Sajid Mehdi confirmed blocking the social networking site X in a National Assembly meeting.
He stated that no other country monitors fake news as closely as Pakistan and revealed that 86,000 SIM cards were blocked for anti-state activities.
Mehdi added that the Electronic Crimes Act would soon be amended, and the Prime Minister had formed a task force to address the issue.
Member of Parliament Asia Naz Tanoli presented a notice calling for immediate action to stop the spread of fake news. She emphasized the damage caused by fake news, urging the implementation of preventive measures.
In response, Mehdi declared fake news a national security threat and outlined the government's efforts to address it, including blocking Twitter and addressing loopholes in the Electronic Crimes Act 2016.
Member of Parliament Nuzhat Sadiq also condemned fake news for damaging the country's reputation and institutions, calling for swift action.
