Pashtun residents of Islamabad have refuted social media allegations accusing the city’s police of harassment, dismissing them as baseless propaganda aimed at creating divisions. The statements, gathered from Pashtun shopkeepers and residents, reveal a contrasting narrative that underscores mutual respect and cooperation.
“I have lived in Islamabad for 30 years and have never faced harassment from the police,” said a Pashtun shopkeeper, emphasizing the positive relationship between the community and law enforcement. Another shopkeeper expressed similar sentiments, stating, “The police have always cooperated with us. They are here for our protection.”
The backlash comes in response to a social media campaign alleging that Islamabad police have been targeting the Pashtun community. Residents, however, highlighted that the police only take action against individuals involved in illegal activities, regardless of their ethnicity.
“For the past 10 years, I’ve been selling medicine here and have never been troubled by the police,” shared another Pashtun resident. He added, “These allegations on social media are false and intended to spread discord.”
Multiple Pashtun residents reiterated that law-abiding citizens have had no issues with Islamabad police. “If you are not involved in any wrongdoing, no one will harass you,” a local shopkeeper said.
Islamabad police have faced similar allegations in the past, often debunked by community members. Officials maintain their commitment to ensuring public safety and upholding the law without discrimination.
