Lionel Messi was named Major League Soccer's Most Valuable Player for 2024 on Friday.

Messi finished the season with 36 goal contributions, including 20 goals and 16 assists, which led the league. Despite battling injuries and making only 19 appearances, Messi's impact on the field was undeniable.
The 37-year-old forward became the 10th South American player to win the MVP award, and the fifth from Argentina, following Luciano Acosta, Diego Valeri, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, and Christian Gomez.
Messi received the award during a ceremony at Inter Miami's Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, where he shared the moment with the team's Academy players. In a video posted on the club’s website, Messi expressed his gratitude and pride for being part of the team and city. He encouraged the Academy players to continue pursuing their dreams.
MLS commissioner Don Garber praised Messi's contribution to the league, noting that his presence elevated the level of football in the U.S. and brought unprecedented stardom to Major League Soccer.
