PU student 'killed near gym'; university denies shooting on campus
A Punjab University student was killed in a shooting incident at Punjab University, and subsequently, a student organization staged a sit-in outside the Punjab University.
Following the incident, the traffic was jammed on Canal Road, Barkat Market, and surrounding roads.
The student organization allegedly attacked the Punjab University admin block and started vandalism including ransacking flower pots and doors.
The injured youth was shifted to Sheikh Zayed Hospital emergency but the victim expired upon reaching the hospital.
'No shooting on campus'
Later on Thursday, in a news conference, PU Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Mahmood, along with the registrar and chief security officer, attempted to address the rumours surrounding the alleged shooting at the university.
Dr Mahmood confirmed that the university had received information about a student being shot somewhere and subsequently dying. "The Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) activists reported firing at five places at different times. All five locations were investigated by the police and security staff, and CCTV footage reviewed," said Dr. Mahmood.
The Pro-VC claimed that their investigation showed no shooting incident had actually taken place within the university premises. He also claimed there was no eyewitness to the shooting incident; neither bullet shell nor blood was found from any place.
The deceased was a student of gender studies and the nephew of a university administrative officer, he added.
He emphasized that there was no evidence of such an incident on the new campus. Dr Mahmood noted that the exact location of the shooting incident remains unclear and is not confirmed to have happened at the university. "The IJT is deliberately blaming the administration of PU. IJT activists attacked the admin block, broke the windows, attacked the canteen and vandalised it."
Dr Mahmood urged students and staff to refrain from protests until the investigation is completed. "We do not know in which part of the city the incident occurred, but we are committed to fully cooperating with the authorities to uncover the facts," he added.
