The Khunjerab Pass, located on the Pakistan-China border, has been made operational throughout the year for trade. This is the first time in Pakistan's history that the pass will remain open year-round, a decision aimed at facilitating uninterrupted trade between Pakistan, China, and Central Asian countries.
The pass is a significant trade corridor, enabling the movement of goods such as machinery, textiles, electronics, and food supplies. Over recent years, Pakistan has used the route to transport industrial and agricultural products to Central Asian states, including Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan.
At the Sost Dry Port, the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) has introduced upgrades to support year-round trade. These include infrastructure enhancements like the installation of a central heating system to ensure smooth operations during winter months.
Officials have indicated that the move is intended to strengthen trade links and economic activity in the region, with the pass serving as a vital conduit for commerce. The Khunjerab Pass is also a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and broader regional trade initiatives.
The year-round operation is expected to enable consistent cross-border activities and enhance logistical efficiency for all participating nations.
