A closely fought by-election is underway in Punjab Assembly constituency PP-139, Sheikhupura, where a tough contest is expected between Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Rana Tahir Iqbal and independent candidate Ijaz Hussain Bhatti, who is reportedly backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Former PML-N MPA Mian Abdul Rauf is also in the running as an independent, adding another layer of complexity to the election after he opted out from the PMLN party ticket.
The seat fell vacant following the death of MPA Rana Afzal Hussain, the brother of Federal Minister for Industries Rana Tanveer Hussain.
The development has made the contest particularly significant for the PML-N as it aims to retain the constituency amidst internal divisions and rising competition.
124 Polling Stations with Tight Security
A total of 193,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots at 124 polling stations across the constituency. Among these, 24 polling stations have been declared highly sensitive, and 34 have been marked as sensitive. To ensure smooth proceedings, Sheikhupura Police have implemented a foolproof security plan, deploying nearly 2,000 personnel and volunteers, with Rangers providing additional support.
Search operations and flag marches were conducted in the area ahead of polling to maintain law and order. The voting process, which began at 8 am, will continue until 5 pm without any breaks.
The by-election outcome is anticipated to be a litmus test for the PML-N's ability to maintain its grip on the region amid challenges posed by independent and opposition-backed candidates.
