Owing to improved air quality conditions, the Punjab government has announced a change in school timings across the province, including Lahore.
From December 4, private and government schools will be allowed to commence classes at 8:15am, a half-hour earlier than before.
The director general of the environment department, Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh, issued a formal notification to this effect. The decision applies uniformly to all private and government schools across Punjab.
This adjustment aligns with the recent improvement in the air quality index (AQI) across the region.
The Punjab government reopened schools in Lahore and Multan on Nov 20 after loosening restrictions placed due to the alarming increase in smog levels in Lahore and other cities of Punjab.

After a period of closure due to the cities' air quality reaching hazardous levels, schools resumed in-person classes. However, to ensure the health and safety of students and staff, certain restrictions remained in place.
- School timings: Schools will not open before 8:45am.
- Mask mandate: Students and teachers are required to wear masks throughout the school day.
- Outdoor activities ban: All outdoor sports and co-curricular activities will be suspended.
The Environment Department had urged schools to strictly adhere to these guidelines to mitigate the impact of smog and air pollution.
