Ali Fazal, renowned for his gripping portrayal of Guddu Bhaiya in the hit Prime Video series Mirzapur, is gearing up to bring his larger-than-life character to the big screen in the upcoming Mirzapur: The Film.
In a recent interview with India Today Digital, the actor shared his excitement for the film adaptation and his thoughts on the potential expansion of his character.
Mirzapur, which has gained a massive following due to its compelling portrayal of gangsters and power struggles in the heart of India, is set to transition from the small screen to a cinematic experience.
As the series makes its leap to the silver screen, fans are eagerly awaiting to see their favourite characters, including Fazal’s Guddu Bhaiya, in a fresh, larger-than-life format.
Fazal, who has garnered widespread acclaim for his role in the series, admitted that while his character has already been explored in great depth over the course of three seasons, he remains uncertain about how much further his role can be expanded on screen.
“I am truly excited about the film, as it marks a first for us. Interestingly, around the same time, one of the biggest Hollywood series, Peaky Blinders, also announced plans to adapt their show into a film,” said Fazal. “In terms of my character, I’m not entirely sure how much more can be explored, given that many facets have already been expanded on."
While the film will aim to encapsulate the world of Mirzapur in a shorter, cinematic form, Fazal acknowledged the challenge of distilling the complexity of the series into a one- or two-hour film. "The goal now is to distil all the depth from the three seasons into a concise one- or two-hour cinematic experience, which is quite a challenge. It all depends on how the story unfolds in this new format," he explained.
The Mirzapur film promises to delve deeper into the gritty underworld of the fictional town, with the rowdy gangsters returning to their iconic roles. Fans can expect an adrenaline-filled ride, with Fazal's Guddu Bhaiya likely to have a commanding presence on the big screen.
The film, backed by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, is being created by Puneet Krishna and directed by Gurmmeet Singh. A teaser video for the film, featuring the stars, including Pankaj Tripathi and Divyenndu, was released on social media, heightening anticipation for the film's release.
