Renowned Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has sparked a nationwide debate by challenging state governments over restrictions on songs promoting alcohol.
His comments came after the Telangana government banned such songs during his recent concert in Hyderabad.
At his Ahmedabad concert, Dosanjh said, "The good news is that today I have not received any notice. I will not sing songs promoting alcohol here because alcohol is banned in Gujarat."
Dosanjh openly criticized the Telangana government, stating, "You cannot fool people like this. During the pandemic lockdown, everything was closed except liquor shops. If governments truly care, let them shut down liquor shops across the country. If that happens, I will stop singing songs about alcohol."
Punjabi superstar also addressed fans at the concert, urging them to start a movement to ban alcohol nationwide.
He pointed out the hypocrisy of targeting his music while Bollywood actors openly promote alcohol in advertisements. "I don’t even drink, yet my songs are under scrutiny, while Bollywood thrives on promoting alcohol culture," he said.
The controversy escalated after Dosanjh remarked that international artists are given freedom to perform as they wish in India, but local artists face undue restrictions. He suggested his success might be a reason for such criticism.
Despite the ban, Dosanjh remained optimistic, saying, "It is very easy to tweak songs. I have sung dozens of good songs, but people are only talking about ‘Patiala Peg.’ I will adapt, and people will still love my music."
The debate has reignited discussions about censorship, cultural norms, and the double standards applied to Indian artists compared to international performers.
Fans and critics alike are now closely watching how state governments respond to Dosanjh's challenge.
