Shubman Gill, the standout performer in India's one-day internationals this year, is set to sit out of the World Cup clash against Afghanistan due to his ongoing recovery from dengue fever, as confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday.
Despite being the leading run-scorer and forming a formidable opening partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma, the 24-year-old opener missed India's recent six-wicket victory over Australia.
In a statement, the BCCI announced that Shubman Gill will not be joining the team's journey to Delhi on October 9, 2023.
Instead, he will remain in Chennai, where he will receive continued medical supervision from the team's medical staff.
This absence paves the way for Ishan Kishan, who deputised for Gill in the previous match against Australia, to likely once again partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the batting order when India faces Afghanistan in New Delhi on Wednesday.
