Shoppers stumped by Moschino's peculiar £3,700 bag crafted to look like a celery stick - as major supermarket responds with budget-friendly option
Italian fashion house Moschino has sparked discussion by unveiling a £3,730 clutch bag fashioned in the shape of a bunch of celery sticks.
Consumers have labeled the Italian luxury label, renowned for its playful and food-inspired creations - including its £995 French bread leather bag, 'bonkers' for marketing the 'meticulously handcrafted' green accessory for almost £4,000.
The distinctive handbag has captured the attention of retailer Aldi, with the budget supermarket choosing to challenge the luxury brand by presenting its shoppers with an economical alternative - priced at 75p.
The designer piece, named the 'Sedano Bag', is crafted from nappa leather and is characterized by the brand as a 'maxi celery-shaped clutch with a digital print that has a three-dimensional effect'.
The company further noted that its two-tone coloring added 'realism to the accessory' and 'its unique shape represents the symbol of Moschino's irreverent spirit'.
The development appears to have motivated Aldi to venture into high fashion, despite their item lacking style and couture, yet abundant in practicality.
Poking fun at Moschino, Aldi posted an image on Facebook featuring a model wearing a nude mac coat while holding a bunch of green celery sticks listed at 75p.
The text stated: "Your move Moschino, but we do have a whole veg aisle."
The model is shown wandering through the fruit and veg section while adopting various poses, and in one shot appears before displays of oranges and green apples.
The photographs shared notable resemblances with the advertisement on Moschino's website - the sole distinction being the use of an actual celery-shaped bag, and naturally its substantial price tag.
Moschino detailed that the leaves and branches on the bag were constructed with a wire core 'to allow their movement and create the desired volume'.
The sophisticated accessory also incorporates 'digital print' which references 'the photograph of a real celery'.
However customers remain skeptical and have responded to both the expensive bag and Aldi's mockery with incredulity and humor.
"Have Moschino actually lost the plot?" wrote one person.
Another remarked: "Brilliant as always Aldi! [I] think Moschino have taken leaf of their senses".
Doubting its reality, someone else commented: "lol I had to look! Didn't believe it! But it's true!"
Meanwhile one individual questioned: "Who would actually buy a celery bag?"
Elsewhere, a shopper on Reddit quipped: "Where would you wear these? At the farmers market?"
Another stated: "I might as well use what's in my fridge and go outside" and a third declared: "I think it's rich people cosplaying regular people who do things like buying groceries lol".
