World Teachers’ Day is being observed today (Thursday) to celebrate all educators around the globe.
This year, the theme of the day is: "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage".
“With the theme the 2023 celebrations will aim to put the importance of stopping the decline in the number of teachers and then starting to increase that number at the top of the global agenda,” wrote United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on its website.
António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, turned to X and wrote: “44 million additional teachers are still needed worldwide to achieve quality education for everyone, everywhere”.

The celebrations for World Teachers' Day kickstarted in 1994.
The day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
In a world that constantly evolves, there remains a timeless profession that stands as the bedrock of our society – teaching.
The noble profession:
Teaching is far more than a profession; it's a calling. It's a vocation that requires boundless passion, unwavering commitment, and the patience of saints. Teachers are entrusted with the task of molding young minds, instilling knowledge, values, and the capacity to dream. They are the shepherds guiding their flock towards a brighter tomorrow.
The impact beyond the classroom:
The influence of a teacher extends far beyond the confines of the classroom. Every teacher leaves an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of their students. It's the teacher who ignites the flame of curiosity, who inspires confidence in the face of adversity, and who instills a lifelong love for learning.
A beacon of inspiration:
We all have that one teacher who stands out in our memory – the one who made us believe in ourselves, the one who saw potential when others didn't, and the one who encouraged us to reach for the stars.
These educators are the unsung heroes of society, quietly shaping the future one student at a time.
