Meta has launched new Teen Accounts on Instagram, designed to provide a safer environment for users under 16.
These accounts have built-in safety features and stricter content controls, and teens will automatically be moved into these accounts.
To remove restrictions, teens will need parental approval, giving parents more oversight of their child’s online experience.
The introduction of Teen Accounts follows a report from The Wall Street Journal that revealed Instagram was recommending sexual content to teens. In response, Meta has implemented measures that limit interactions and exposure to inappropriate material.
Despite these restrictions, teens will still have opportunities to explore their interests.
Meta is introducing topic-based content suggestions in categories like Animals & Pets, Soccer, Technology, and Cooking, allowing young users to engage with positive, tailored content through the platform’s Explore tab.
