Leading figure in the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Senator Irfan Siddiqui, announced his resignation from the Senate Standing Committee on Education on Thursday.
Senator Raahat Jamali, a fellow PML-N member, has been named to take Siddiqui's place on the education committee. Siddiqui will now serve on the National Health Committee.
The resignation comes after Siddiqui was interrupted in the middle by Senator Bushra Anjum Butt, the chairperson, during a recent education committee hearing.
Instead, the chairperson gave the committee's secretary a chance to speak, which prompted senators Fauzia Arshad of the PTI and Khalida Ateeb of the MQM to protest and demand an apology.
Senator Bushra Anjum Butt expressed her apology, which Siddiqui accepted.
On Thursday, however, Siddiqui met with Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and formally submitted his resignation from the panel. An official notification has been sent out following his resignation's acceptance.
