The government of Pakistan, implementing its zero-tolerance policy, has taken firm actions against smuggling, hoarding, and electricity theft.
The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has facilitated these measures, which have been effective since September 1, 2023, leading to the arrest of numerous individuals and the recovery of billions of rupees.
Reportedly, 3,249 metric tonnes of smuggled fertilizer were intercepted during anti-smuggling operations, and its illegal transportation was controlled. In operations against the smuggling of essential food items, authorities also confiscated 361 metric tonnes of wheat and flour from smugglers.
Over the past 11 months, 34,731 metric tonnes of sugar have been confiscated, preventing illegal profiteering. A total of 149,710 rolls of cloth were confiscated, aiding in the regulation of the black market in textiles.
Due to the anti-smuggling efforts, seven million litres of Iranian oil were confiscated, which helped stabilize the fuel market.
Authorities have confiscated 43,644 metric tonnes of fertilizer from hoarders since September 2023, ensuring its availability for farmers.
Similarly, 2,505 metric tonnes of wheat, 57,051 metric tonnes of ghee, and 10,907 metric tonnes of sugar were recovered from those manipulating market prices due to hoarding.
Law enforcement agencies have registered 173,212 FIRs against individuals involved in electricity theft, arrested over 83,295 electricity thieves, and recovered Rs104 billion.
These actions, conducted by the government in partnership with the SIFC, underscore the government's dedication to enforcing the rule of law and protecting Pakistan's economy.
The actions against smuggling, hoarding, and electricity theft, as well as the 'Zero Tolerance Policy,' are intended to dismantle illegal networks, stabilize markets, and ensure the provision of essential items at fair prices.
